Dr.Sudhakar Morthala is board certified in General Psychiatry and Forensic Psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.

He is currently in private practice in General and Forensic Psychiatry in Elgin, South Carolina.  He spends time treating patients and is frequently consulted to provide expert opinion on Forensic issues and has conducted more than 200 Forensic Evaluations in the past four years.

In 2005, he completed his Psychiatry Residency Program at the Albert Einstein Medical Center, Philadelphia, PA.  During his residency training , Dr.Morthala was actively involved in administrative work as well. He served as a Chief Resident and as an Administrative Chief Resident for Medical student education and was also a member of several key committees during his training.

Dr.Morthala has ample experience in the research setting. He has worked as a Research Associate at Psychopharmacology research unit in Manhattan Psychiatric Center, New York, NY in 2001.

Dr.Morthala finished his medical school training in Rangaraya Medical College, India and holds a South Carolina State Medical License and Federal DEA and South Carolina Controlled Substance Licenses.

Some recent presentations by Dr.Morthala in academic settings have included the following : "A Case of Traumatic Brain Injury: Biopsychosocial Interventions", "Narcissistic Personality Disorder & Pathological Grief", “Malingering of Post-traumatic Stress Disorder" and “Psychiatric Malpractice”.  Post-traumatic Stress Disorder: Forensic Issues was published in the Journal of Evidence Based Psychiatry, University of South Carolina, Columbia, SC in August 2006.

He contributes medical articles regularly to the Kershaw County Medical Center Newsletter.  The most recent ones have been Teenage Depression and Depression in the Elderly. In addition he takes the time to provide education and create awareness about mental health by giving public presentations.  Recent talks have included “Dealing with Holiday Depression” and “Is it ADHD?” at the Kershaw County Medical Center, Health Resource Center in Camden, South Carolina.

He is a member of the American Psychiatric Association, American Academy of Psychiatry and Law and the South Carolina Psychiatric Association.

Forensic Psychiatry Experience:
He completed his Forensic Psychiatry Fellowship training at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine, Division of Law and Psychiatry in Columbia, SC in 2006.

He has conducted more than two hundred Forensic Psychiatry Evaluations in the past two years related to various Forensic issues including, Competency to Stand Trial, Criminal Responsibility, Death Penalty, Psychiatric Malpractice, Sexual Harassment, Fitness for Duty, Psychiatric Disability and Violence Risk Assessment. 

Dr.Morthala has qualified as an expert witness in Pennsylvania, Lousiana and in South Carolina (civil and criminal settings).

Dr.Morthala has been invited as faculty to serve as expert witness and train solicitors at the National Advocacy Center in Columbia, South Carolina in 2005, 2006.  He has also been invited as faculty to serve as expert witness and train public defenders at National Institute of Trial Advocacy (NITA)- Habeas Institute in Atlanta, Georgia, in 2006.
